Synthroid can i take at night
For many people, levothyroxine Levoxyl , Synthroid , Tirosint , Unithroid is an effective treatment to replace missing thyroid hormone. However, up to 15 percent of those with an underactive thyroid may have a genetic variation that makes them less efficient at converting levothyroxine T4 to the active form, triiodothyronine T3.
Many of these individuals feel better taking a desiccated thyroid preparation such as Armour, Nature-Throid or Westhroid. This is not appropriate for everyone, as these products are derived from pig thyroid gland.
As a result, they are not desirable for vegetarians or people following Muslim or Jewish dietary laws. Doctors may worry that these natural products are more variable in dose than synthetic levothyroxine, though we have not seen head-to-head studies confirming this problem. I have one; however, any endo I have seen wants me to drop the Naturethroid and go back to a synthetic. While I have not experienced any of the wonders others have by switching, I am not interested in switching once again.
As I have had thyroid cancer, it is important to my health to take enough to suppress my TSH score. Except now that I am 78, two endos have told me I no longer need concern myself about this. The same endos who said tight control of diabetes is no longer necessary.
One of the endos was at Stanford, so they are just as rigid in standard of care there as anywhere in the boonies. One, a nurse, had cardiac arrhythmia from pills well in excess of the dosage they were supposed to have, sending her to the emergency room.
One had a 30 lb. The other had neurological problems and tremors, again, resolving after Armour was removed from the equation and replaced with synthetic hormone.
Therefore, bedtime administration can be a viable option for some patients. For patients who are consistent with their morning administration, exhibit thyroid function levels within appropriate ranges, and have no multi-medication challenges that impose the risk of adverse interactions ie, calcium supplement , there is little need to explore alternative administration strategies to the am norm. While not all patients may be candidates for evening administration, those who indicate the following conditions could try the change to bedtime, at least for a trial:.
When the response is affirmative for a consistent routine at bedtime and there are no competing medication needs, the option of switching to the evening is worthy of consideration, particularly for patients who express this desire or for whom better adherence may be enhanced by this recommendation, even for a trial period. When patients are going to take their levothyroxine at bedtime, the following instructions should be provided:. Interestingly, it is worth reconsidering the rigidity of the 4-hour post meal rule since there is a study in which levothyroxine was administered 2 hours after the evening meal, and the researchers found no difference in thyroid function studies, quality of life, or dose requirements in comparison to patients taking levothyroxine according to the currently recommended 4-hour window after a meal.
Ideally, levothyroxine should be the only medication administered at bedtime. Just as with morning dosing, it is best to avoid coadministration with other medications. Tsh 4. Hasan Khondker answered. Hello Christine! Glad to be of help. The way I changed over was to take my levo in the morning as usual, then another dose in the evening, then every evening from then on.
I felt the change in my body almost straight away; others have said it took a week or so to see a difference. Best of luck and fingers crossed! Let me know how you get on Hildegard jennifer Ah thanks for pointing that out, I see cos otherwise you'd go almost 2 days between doses - will do. I shall start by taking an additional 50mcg tonight! Is it the empty stomach that makes the difference do you think? Cos i usually take my morning dose with a shedload of other pills I have to take at breakfast - maybe thats whats making it less effective - taking it at the same time as naproxen, codeine, lithium, valproate And stopping lithium now wouldnt make much difference - the damage is permanent, apparently.
Will report back in a week, keep em X'd for me! Morning Christine! It does matter a great deal that you take your thyroxine well away from other meds, especially iron and calcium.
A rule of thumb is to take your thyroxine 2 hours away from any food, pills, supplements and drinks, except water, and 4 hours away from calcium and iron. Got my fingers x'd for you! Hi Hildegard,I was told to take mine in the morning but not with other pills and not to eat for 30mins after taking thyroxin,it gives the medicine time to get into blood stream. Hi im new to this site Im having the same issues as you. I WAS also taking Lithium. And yes its probably what has taken your Thyroid out.
If its possible, I would talk to your doctor about finding something else before it gets worse. Believe it or not, but as long as the damage to your thyroid isn't bad it can reverse itself!!
Hi Jennifer. The only thing was that it made my heart pound so fast for about 2mins then went away! But when I woke up Sunday morning it felt so nice to not feel a single head heavy fog feeling. I still want to take it at night but I'm scared of the heart fast pounding. Maybe cause I didn't take my Friday and Saturday pill?!?!? Will try to switch to nights.
Hope it makes me feel better. You said you took a dose in morning and another at night??
