Why telus is better than shaw
Because we are already a mobility customer we got a discount on top of the Black Friday deal. This went very well and the engineer that came to our home was quick and thorough providing us with the training necessary.
We got two-wire connections, one for the TV and the other for my computer. For my computer, this provided me with a Mbps download and upload speed.
All I need do is turn my wifi on when I print and airdrop. I found the connection with Shaw was unpredictable, Mbps would go down to 60 or 90 which was tough when trying to hold meetings online over Skype or Zoom.
The Wifi speed is around Mbps Upload and Download. Rather than a desk modem, the Telus device sits in a closet where the wire comes into the home. This is so much more convenient than taking up room on my desk, so much better. The only problem I experienced was not being able to send jobs to my printer through wifi, I have no idea why that happened but I managed to resolve it in a couple of days.
Could just be the wiring in the house I live in but we had to have 3 tech visits just to get one cable box to work over 3 months. Why did they have to come back after they got it working the first time? Well, the cord of the cable converter was unplugged One of the techs was alright but the other two basically stood in the room talking about random bs wasting our time we had to take off work to accommodate them while the HQ figured out what was wrong.
When I asked what that was the guy got an uncomfortable look on his face and changed the subject. Clearly dog fornicating to justify a service call charge. The final time I needed their services I used the online chat function and they set up a separate box just fine. Total Clown show. Probably best to look for offers of free terms and play them against each other.
They do free years etc if you switch but if you prefer competence, don't expect it from all of Shaw's techs.
Every few days the digital TV would start crapping out. That took about ten service calls and I can't remember the problem but it wasn't the building's wiring or the cables outsite of it. Can still recall trying to watch the superbowl while every five seconds it looks like morpheus was trying to contact us. Shaw has the absolute worst upload speeds for example their Shaw plan has 20mbps upload speed and 7. So if you do any cloud based things, streaming, gaming essentially anything where your putting information back on the internet Shaw sucks.
That gets me internet which was just upgraded to as well as basic channels. Telus usually has the faster plans and occasionally better pricing but when it comes to customer service and the overall business model I choose Shaw everyday. Telus sends out their con artist sales people door to door, to prey on typically older folks, promising them better service than they have at a better price usually before even knowing what kind of plan that person is currently on.
Once they get your signature and they won't leave your door without a signature - good luck getting them to leave info so you can do your own research, they won't , you usually find out months later that there was some "key" detail that sales person left out.
But too late, you're on a 2 year contract now! If you can live with a company that preys on seniors amongst other people with tactics like I described above, then by all means choose Telus.
Just hope that you never have to call one of their customer service centers. They have no concept of customer loyalty. Whether you're a 10 year customer or just signed your contract, prepare to be treated like crap. You guys should look at Techsavvy I know a few people that have it and say it's pretty good and quite a bit cheaper.
You can post now and register later. If you have an account, sign in now to post with your account. Paste as plain text instead. Only 75 emoji are allowed. Display as a link instead. Clear editor. Both offer acceptable service. It's not that I want to switch. The pattern is always the same: initial great deal for switching, followed by a crappy offer to continue at the end of the promo term, but able to extend with a slightly worse deal for a year or two by talking to Retentions, Then finally they won't offer anything but a really crappy deal, even though I warn them that I'm going to cancel and switch.
So I switch, and sometimes a few days later they call me back and make a better offer - too late. BTW, that's why both ask you to let them cancel the other service when you switch - they don't want to give the competition the opportunity to make a last-minute save. Before you switch, call your current provider and make sure they send you to Retentions, where there are agents who have the power to make a deal, unlike the regular phone agents.
The easiest way is just to say that you are calling to cancel service, although some will switch you to Retentions just for asking. Before you do this, you should know what the competition is offering, and be prepared to actually switch. If you are just testing the waters and you are not actually prepared to switch, they will likely detect that and your chances of getting a good offer are lower.
If you are a long-term customer, your chances of getting a good offer are worse, because they know that you will be reluctant to leave. They may test you with a mediocre offer first, and you only get the good offer when you say "thanks, but no thanks - please schedule disconnect" remember, you can always cancel a disconnect that is several days away.
Consider it to be something like negotiating with a rug merchant in a Moroccan bazaar - "Your ridiculous price is an insult to both of us. Take your worthless product away and inflict it on me no more" I meant 5, esteemed sir, even though it will bankrupt my family to give up our finest for this pittance. I called Shaw twice yesterday and asked to talk to someone in retentions and both times they offered me less internet speed from 75 to 50 and less TV for more money than what I was paying before my contract ran out.
Tough to leave after all these years but screw them for not wanting to retain a long term customer. No speed slow downs in the evenings or constant speed tests to see why my Internet speed is so slow. Also with fibre you get the same speed no matter what happens and the same speed down as up.
On the Telus website, the deal for both Internet and TV is already better. But, I will call them to see if I can bundle my home phone and get a better deal.
Thought I was going to miss Shaw Go Wi-Fi but my brother is on Shaw and he said that he can have up to 10 email addresses and he said that he will make 4 for us so we can still access it on his account. The deals on their website are trash. You can do so much better if you call when they have promotional offers going on. Look in the ongoing deals section of RFD. There's a Telus thread where people discuss what deals they've gotten. You should check it out to learn how far you can push.
Shaw is still offering 50mbps? I would ask for a higher speed plan and see if the deals are any better. Sometimes Shaw might try to make more money off legacy plans.
Telus vs Shaw are pretty equal in experience for internet in my experience. I think Telus has actually stopped giving ETAs on fibre rollout. As a Koodo customer, I get Telus home service sales rep calls from time to time. I told Telus to call back when they finally have fibre to our home. Fibre optic internet is better in every single way possible over coax cable internet, namely in latency and upload speeds.
For a few years, Shaw had a big advantage over Telus with the 2 years price guarantees, which Telus also offers now. Not to mention Shaw vs Telus is very location dependent as well. One company might not work as well as the other and be problem ridden in a particular neighbourhood.
